First thing in Gentoo upgrading is usually to get portage as fresh as possible. Latest stable portage at this moment is 18.104.22.168. Get More Information Any version.
This takes care of upgrading portage. For using Google App Engine, I wanted to emerge Python 2.5, so I did emerge -av =dev-lang/python-2.5.4-r4 and everything went fine, until: /usr/bin/install -c -m 644 pyconfig.h /var/tmp/portage/dev-lang/python-2.5.4-r4/image//usr/include/python2.5/pyconfig.h emake failed * Mask newer ones. Finding out what is the minimum required python version is a bit harder.
